As the name suggests, this is not an easy race.There were 236 finishers.
The very much in form Phoenix vet Donald Maclellan was our only representative and he took the race by storm, winning in a time of 1:00:26.
To give an idea of the quality of this performance, the second placed runner was 46 seconds adrift and the third almost two minutes behind.
Great run Donald.

A perfect summer evening for the annual club Handicap run. A good turnout and a very tight finish amongst the field due to good handicapping ( and not believing everything the runners said about their level of fitness!)

Almost perfect conditions, although the breeze from the east made the last few kilometres a challenge. Good turnout from Phoenix. This was also the Sussex 10K championships. As far as I can see our County medal winners are Terry Avey with silver in the over 60 category and Bob Novis with bronze in the over 50s.

The first of this season's Sussex Grand Prix Races (and also Sussex 10K Challenge) this is a fast and flat course, but overcast and windy conditions were not ideal. There were 1610 finishers with the race won in 30:04 (Benjamin Noad, Highgate Harriers).

Those that ran it were agreed this is a great race but the results are a mess. Only the top ten finishers had names matched to times. This seems inexcusable for such a high profile event.

This opening race of the Sussex Grand Prix season and of the Sussex 10k Challenge series is flat and fast and attracts 1500+ athletes including 14 from Phoenix. Leading runner was Josh Guilmant who recorded a chip time of 30:59 to give him seventh place and a pb by 30 seconds or so. Other results (chip times shown) were as follows:

As this was also the English regionas championship it was always going to be a class field. Quite how classy is shown with the fact that Josh Guilmant ran a superb 31:61, was leading Sussex athlete but managed only 15th place. 40 Phoenix athletes competed and their results can be seen here (select '10K', 'All' and click on the club column heading to group all Phoenix results together. Hot, hilly and the most gorgeous autumn morning you could wish for. The increasingly popular Firle Running Festival hosted a Half marathon and a 10k with most (including five Phoenix athletes) opting for the former. Tom Coates was our star with a sensational run for third place in a field of 300+
