Sussex Cross country Relay champs Goodwood

    Sat 3 Oct 2009

Isn't life surprising. We've been commenting lately about relatively few women competing in running events and then bingo! – an unheard of four teams are entered for this event. What's more we've shown what we can do – with the A team (Erica Martin, Sundai Boulton and Liz Durman) winning a neck and neck battle with Horsham Blue Star for first spot. The B team(Angel Collins, Rachel Phelps, Erica Martin) would have placed seventh but for Erica running a second leg. As it was the C team (Deb Friis, Faye McClelland, Liz Halliday) were placed 9th and the D team (Hildi Mitchell, Sue Hudson and Ananda Mello-Costa) placing 13th.

The senior men also triumphed with Dave Carter, Charlie Grice, James Miles and Finn McNally running themselves into second place.

Elsewhere Archie Davis and Billie White ran great legs in the U13 boys event but lacked a third runner for what might have been a winning team. The U15 boys (Luke Reynolds, Jack Donaghy and Robbie Fitgibbon) were 4th team. Paul Collicutt and Malcolm Hughes ran well for the masters but alas were two runners short.

Firle Festival of Running Half Marathon

    Sun 27 Sep 2009

Hot, hilly and the most gorgeous autumn morning you could wish for. The increasingly popular Firle Running Festival hosted a Half marathon and a 10k with most (including five Phoenix athletes) opting for the former. Tom Coates  was our star with a sensational run for third place in a field of 300+

    3rd Tom Coates 1:25:38, 48th Jon Pike 1:43:25, 64th Lenka Sobotkova 1:45:40, 89th Andrew Haig 1:49:08, 169th Rachel Perry 2:00:55.

    Hove Prom 10k

    Sun 20 Sep 2009

Fourteen athletes competed the Hove Prom 10K. Unfortunately there were only two women among them. A third might well have netted us the £270 team prize (nine to count of which three needed to be women). This shouldn't take away though from some fantastic performances with James Miles – second overall and Erica Martin – winner of the  women's race, showing the way. There were no fewer than eight pbs as well.

    2nd James Miles 34:51, 17th Joe Francis 37:26 PB, 23rd Andy Bone 37:40 PB, 28th Ray Matthews 38:04 PB, 29th Erica Martin 38:06 ist woman, 33rd Nigel Herron 38:23, 38th Tom Farsides 38:51, 43rd Lance Bellers 39:02 PB, 47th James Hayward 39:16 PB, 51st Paul Collicutt 39:43, 72nd Jim Whitelegg 40:52 PB, 83rd Andrew Haig 42:48 1st M60, 143rd Faye McCLelland 47:37 PB, 250th Paul Thomas 71:58 PB.
